History of Food For Children
The First Steps: Cabrini Medical Center
Food For Children was founded in 1979, the International Year of the Child, by employees of Cabrini Medical Center in Manhattan. Many Religious who worked at Cabrini Medical Center were supportive of this organization, including Father Vincent Pulicano; Sr. Josephine Tsuei; Fr. George DePrizio; Sr. Loretta Palamara; Sr. Arlene Primus; Sr. Barbara Leonardo; Sr. Regina Palamara; Rev. James Daniels; Rev. Howard Sponholz; and many others. These Religious, along with many employees of Cabrini Medical Center, gave Food For Children its start.
It should be particularly noted that the Philippine-American community has been and continues to be very supportive of Food For Children's work by contributing their time, talents and funds towards our goals. Our deepest appreciation to you! Also deserving of honorable mention is our most loyal benefactress, Ms. Rose Palestra, who has made steady donations to Food For Children for the past twenty years. Thank you, Rose!
Food For Children continues today in the spirit of Mother Cabrini and the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart in service to the poor. For a list of Food For Children board members from Cabrini Medical Center, see the section entitled Board Members.
The Next Steps: Victory Memorial Hospital
Food For Children is also indebted to its collaborators from Victory Memorial Hospital in Brooklyn. Through their help and support, Food For Children was given the impetus to continue and to expand its services. A special note of thanks to Brother Lewis Morrow and the Congregation of the Holy Cross for their ongoing financial support of Food For Children. For a list of Food For Children board members from Victory Memorial Hospital, see the section entitled Board Members.
